Stellar Wonderz

About us

Who we are

We are a team of youth change-makers who believe in community connection through creativity.

Stellar Wonderz is a 501(c)3 student-led nonprofit dedicated to giving hope to all of the star-people in our community. Hospitals can be a challenging place for individuals and their families, and thus our organization aims to aid them in their experience and brighten their days. We accomplish this by donating a variety of crafts and craft kits, such as star bundles, bracelets, bracelet kits, cards and more. Our crafts show patients that they are not alone, and they have several people rooting for them and their journey. Our goal is to provide Wonderz to all veterans, childrens, and other individuals who may need them and illuminate their lives.

One of our crafts, star bundles, contain paper stars with uplifting handwritten messages. Paper stars come from a Japanese legend about a girl named Hoshi.

Hoshi loved the stars and was sad one night when she saw stars falling from the sky. To save them, she made paper stars and put them in a jar, one for every star that fell. She went to the village, told the other children what was happening, and all of them made paper stars together. Hoshi told them, “Whenever a lucky star is made, a falling star is saved.”

Lucky stars are now often folded with wishes for luck and good fortune. They can be given as gifts for good luck and love. The star bundles will also be given as signs of good luck and love. By donating them to patients in need, they will remind the receivers that we’ll eternally support them, be on their side, care about them, and wish them good luck on whatever comes their way.

Our History

Our founder and CEO, Janne Guo, started Stellar Wonderz because of her close cousin, whom she shares the exact same birthday and grew up closely with, was diagnosed with leukemia at a young age. Her battle with cancer lasted for several years, and Janne’s visits with her always consisted of doing art together. Despite the difficulties of chemotherapy, art was a safe space for both her and her cousin.

In middle school, she began folding paper stars as a hobby, adding smiley faces and gifting them to her friends. Her friends always lit up upon receiving a star, and kept them within reach in their bags and pencil cases. Not only that, many became interested in learning how to make them, acknowledging how addicting it could be. Janne’s friends continued crafting these stars and giving them away to their peers as well. Art and creativity then presented itself as a source of happiness and connection, again, and had become a positive impact within her and others’ lives.

Janne was then inspired to expand this impact outside of her circle, and began giving the stars to more people. As someone who grew up serving her community through traditional Chinese dance, dancing for elders and spreading cultural awareness, she identified the potential of this movement. Though paper stars are small pieces of paper, they could do so much more. In order to add on to their positivity, she began writing uplifting messages in them before they were folded. This led to the creation of our star bundles, which many across our hospital/center partnerships enjoy today. Other creative opportunities were also added to create greater accessibility to all volunteers to participate in Stellar Wonderz’ and our founder’s initiative.
